Scientia Music: Ed:it & Voltage Remixes – Incognito 'Lost' ft. Viv May

You’ll probably be familiar with Scientia Music by this point. But if you needed a little nudge, I’d suggest you cast your mind back to a vicious Zero-T mash-up of Kolectiv’s Dog Eat Dog and Launchpad that did the rounds for a minute before the heavyweight Carbon EP by Kolectiv was dropped on Scientia later in 2012.

[dropcap]R[/dropcap]eticent label owner J Science is in fact a long-serving member in the Drum & Bass literati, with a resume that reads like a man who is bound to know his stuff. Unsurprisingly, the A&R evident here is on point and the beats emanating from Scientia Music have continued to do the talking. With a release schedule oriented toward EP’s; Scientia have also brought to the fore the first-rate production talents of Skulpture, Incognito and D.R.O.P.S. Switching it up this time around, Incognito’s ‘Lost’ Ft. Viv May, the title track from his devilishly techy EP of 2014, is to be given the remix treatment. The deep, ethereal quality of this full-vocal track from the kiwi producer lends itself well to the remixers, Ed:it and Voltage.

Hailing from the east Midlands, Ed Warrener, AKA Ed:it, has been just about everywhere on the Drum & Bass map with a slew of releases from Hospital Records / Med School, C.I.A., SGN:LTD, Critical Music, Commercial Suicide and Blu Mar Ten Music, plus a hearty bolstering from underground exponents Flexout Audio, Alignment, Demand, Hustle Audio and Lifestyle Recordings. The producer has carved out a strong name for himself in the past four years, cultivating a healthy fan base and amassing a plethora of support from Drum & Bass’ finest players. It’s no secret, with J Science’s insistence on quality, that Ed:it has been called into the frame here.

Ed:it’s remix of ‘Lost’ is a no-nonsense head knocker. This sleek yet brutish roller maintains the pressure with precision force and delectable groove that’ll whip the listener into a frenzied state, before being plummeted into fierce current of snarling, low slung sub bass. The dogged severity of the track is complemented beautifully by the incorporeal quality of the original vocal from Viv May.
The silky smooth remix from Voltage is up next. Upon research, I realise that the Gloucester based producer packs quite a clout; sparking interest from across the spectrum of Drum & Bass music with his malleable approach to production, including releases (some forthcoming) on Serial Killaz, Spearhead, C.I.A, SGN:LTD, Innerground, Smokin’ Riddims, Dread Recordings and Co-Lab. This impressive crossover artist is out for making sub-heavy, liquid-influenced tracks right now and this remix is no exception.

The Voltage track has played into the predominance of the powerful full vocal and created a level of musicality that will delight fans of an eyes-closed / hands up dance floor sing along. Exquisite string arrangements were recorded in session especially for this liquid infused remix and lend the track, along with the organic sounding beat, an elevated sense of the original, tying it together nicely with truck loads of sub bass and really making it his own. However, I assure you that it won’t be until the second drop before you understand where Voltage is coming from here, for which we can most likely thank his jump up credentials.
This is a great release from Scientia Music. Both tunes are highly operational and mix friendly, with each artist bringing their own element to the original. The Voltage & Ed:it remixes of Lost by Incognito are available here at the Scientia Music bandcamp and from all good digital stores.
