Eightynine EP Ornery & Def4ult

It is rather surreal to be a part of the first official release of a record label. The original mix was born back on October third at a day course in London called ‘BeatCamp’. It’s basically an event for producers like myself to pair up and collaborate to make a track in a day. If you haven’t yet tried it, I highly recommend.

I was paired with my now good buddy Emiliano (A.KA. Ornery, based in Berlin). We thought along the exact same lines from the get go. We knew we were going to do something techno based, we just didn’t know what style of techno we were going to try and pursue. Eventually we thought we would create a Berlin-warehouse techno piece, seeing as Emiliano is based in Berlin and my specialty is warehouse/Berlin techno.

We tried to combine elements like scarce and dissonant melodies with quirked out vocals and 3D soundscapes and surely enough, these elements were matches made in heaven. I think the name came from a vocal hook that originally said “in the year 2889” we shortened it until it just said “89”. We named it last minute and Emiliano just said: ‘Why don’t we just call it 89?’, so we did.

So, we finished the track and at the end of the day we played it out at BeatCamp’s track presentation seminar along with all the other tracks made that day. We completely misjudged the response we got. A fair chunk of the attendees came up and had a chat with either me or Emiliano and luckily we got a few emails here and there.

In terms of how the release came about, we definitely wanted to release it but we didn’t just want to do a single. We had a good confab then we thought about doing a remix EP with all the people who wanted to work with us. So Emiliano asked about and we got some incredible producers to remix our track. Some were from BeatCamp and a couple were from elsewhere. Of course Emiliano and myself had to include out takes on the track.

Overall the EP turned out much better than I ever expected. Obviously, we self publicised it. Emiliano was focusing on social media and I decided to inform my peers of our news, as I am in full time education. I think it’s fair to say that we well and truly succeeded!
