In-Reach // Siren Series – Kyrist

Greek mythology speaks of the three ‘Sirens’: Magnificent, majestic, beautiful yet dangerous creatures, who used enchanting songs to lure sailor’s to their doom; fast forward to 2017 and In-reach: Siren’s series, celebrates 3 of the badass ladies of Drum and Bass; don’t be fooled by those pretty eyes, these girls absolutely bring the fire.

The three sirens were named: ‘Pisinoe’ meaning ‘Persuasive Mind’; ‘Thelxepeia’ meaning ‘Soothing Words’ and ‘Aglaope’ meaning ‘Beautiful Face’..

First up representing ‘Pisinoe’ we have ‘KYRIST’.

Kyrist is currently sitting comfortably at number 8 in the Beatport top 100, with her absolute beauty of an EP ‘Venomous’ on Dispatch Recordings; This marked not only her first EP but also the first ever solo release from a female producer on the Dispatch label. I love to think how many have witnessed their first bit of Kyrist magic over the past few months and given the obligatory pause, nod, bounce that seems to be like the Drum and Bass secret handshake.

2006 marked the year Kyrist first picked up the turntables, playing her first Renegade Hardware night in 2013, since then she has racked up releases on labels such as Addictive Behaviour, Broken Audio, Syrenz, Nurtured Beatz, Dust Audio and Proximity Recordings; before finding her home at Dispatch; I always imagine Dispatch HQ to be accessible only by pulling up a drain cover and climbing down a slime covered ladder; ANT TC1 greets you at the bottom and says “You merely adopted the dark; I was born in it, moulded by it….” My point is, It is where the absolute filth is born: ‘Venomous’ from Kyrist is a prime example:

There have been reviews, Interviews and articles all over the place getting to know Kyrist over the past few weeks (some even spelt her name right..) But I managed to catch a few minutes of her time, not only to inform her she is officially one of three In-reach Sirens, which will obviously be one of her biggest triumphs to date, but also to ask her a few quick fire questions…

PICK ONE WORD TO DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC
I’m going to cheat on this one because I can’t sum it up in one… So I’ll go for – dark, atmospheric and rolling.

Nice one Kirsty… but medium rare!? With the gully sounds engulfing your production I wasn’t expecting you would even cook your meat!

So there you go, that rounds up our first Siren ‘Kyrist’, proving that you don’t need to be male to make it in Drum and Bass, I can only hope this will spur on a few more of the fairer sex to pick up those decks and get involved!
